Fixing up bikes around Ishinomaki…
Driving through scenes of utter destruction on our way into Ishinomaki

Two trucks loaded with 80 bikes departed our storage area at the Shibaura Institute of Technology in Omiya at midnight on Wednesday April 27th. Crew members this time included Daiki, myself, Kobayashi-san from Daiki’s shop, former Japan Air Force engineer Toshi Osanai, and construction specialist Kawagiya-san. We drove through battering rain and wind on the Tohoku Highway to arrive on a brilliantly sunny and warm morning in Miyagi-ken on Thursday April 28th.

Our first drop-off point was in Ishinomaki, an area parts of which had been totally destroyed by the tsunami. We made our way through a decimated part of the town to the skeletal remains of a Lawson convenience store in Goshobashi, where the store manager had volunteered to be a distribution point for 20 bikes for people in his neighborhood.

As we were off-loading the bikes in the street, passers-by gathered to ask what we were doing. Within minutes a queue of 15 people had formed to sign up for bicycles. Their cars and bikes, they said, had been swept away by the tsunami and for the past four weeks they had been moving around on foot - often needing to make their way through the raw sewage flowing over the roads we had seen on our way in. Bicycles are therefore a hugely precious commodity for them.

We left our details with a few community representatives and since yesterday we have received requests for 60 more bikes from them, which we will deliver when we go back to Ishinomaki this weekend.
Our next two deliveries that morning were to two families living across the other side of town. The first was a mum living in Minami Nakazato with a young son and five month old baby, to whom we gave an electric bicycle and a boy’s bike. Until now she had been struggling with the daily walk to the nearest supermarket located quite a distance away. Now she will be able to go shopping with her baby and her son in tow and carry food, water and other supplies back to her apartment.

The next family we met was a mother and her son who lived nearby. The son will soon be starting a course at a university whose campus is over in the next town. He will now be able to make the hour journey by bike to his new school for classes each day.

These families are just two examples of how much difference a bicycle can make to people’s lives.
Next we drove 45 minutes to Fudo-cho on the other side of Ishinomaki, where we had been put in touch with a family in a small community that had requested 20 bikes to share among them. When we arrived at their house we were amazed to see how closely they were located to the bank of an estuary. We later found that although the house was still standing it had been completely flooded by the tsunami tides for over two days, during which time the family had taken refuge in a shelter on a nearby hill. After the water had receded they spent the next 3 weeks cleaning the mud out of the house and drying off the walls, ceilings and floors. They had done an incredible job, to the point where you could almost never have imagined the state the place must have been in just a few weeks earlier.

The grandmother of the house admitted - while she kindly prepared a late impromptu lunch of cup noodles, bread, canned coffee and strawberries - that while she felt anxious about being there with the ever-present threat of further aftershocks and tsunamis, her husband and son were adamant that this is their home and this is where they stay to pull through this together as a family and as a community.

By this point it was approaching 4pm. We had been awake and on the road for 16 hours since leaving Omiya and starting to feel the strain a little. But as we watched Haruta, the two year-old grandson of the family, laughing and giggling as his grandpa pushed him around on his sparkling new metallic-green tricycle, our spirits were raised and we found the lift we needed to push on to our next delivery point in Higashi Matsushima.

We arrived at the Ono-Shinmin Shelter in Higashi Matsushima shortly before 5pm. It had been a hot summer-like day but the temperature was cooling fast and evening was approaching.

Our mission here was to deliver and assemble 13 new kids’ bikes which had been kindly donated last week by triathlete Shin Ishikawa and his friends. The shelter had received several donations of adult bicycles so far, but there were still no bikes for the significant number of children staying there.

Within minutes of offloading the bikes in their boxes we found ourselves surrounded by a sea of kids aged between 2 to 10 years old who started playing with the scooters and trikes we’d also brought along for them. Others helped out as we adjusted the pedals, brakes and wheels, passing us tools and holding fixtures in place. Some parents also emerged from the shelter, some to watch and some to help out.

By 7:30pm it was almost pitch black and so cold our fingers were numb. We managed put the finishing touches to half of the newly-assembled bikes, and a few of the adults there kindly offered to work with the kids to finish fixing up the rest of them the next morning. We’ll be posting the photos we receive from the kids’ school-teacher over the next few days.

With that, we hurried off to our next and final destination - the Takadate Elementary School Shelter in Natori-shi, about one hour away. Here we were met by two high school children who were helping run things at the shelter, who gave us a hand off-loading our final half a dozen adults’ bikes. This included a silver racer we gave to one of them, who was celebrating his birthday yesterday at the shelter. The look of sheer delight on his face was a really nice way to end what had turned into a very long day - and kept us going until we got back into Tokyo at around 2:30am on Friday morning.

What became very clear for us through this trip and the various conversations we had with the people living in the areas we visited, was that while a lot of bicycles have reached communities and shelters in Tohoku through donation programs so far, there are still significant pockets of people in the region who have not yet been reached and who have a critical need for bikes in their daily lives - each for their own unique reasons. The next few weeks will be spent delivering your remaining bikes to the people who need them most, who have not yet been fortunate enough to benefit from other initiatives.
We will next be heading back up to Tohoku again tomorrow (Saturday April 30th), taking around 200 bikes with us destined for locations in Ishinomaki, Kessenuma, Iwate, and Fukushima. We’ll be keeping you closely posted as always!
In the meantime, THANK YOU very much indeed for your continued support!
GANBARIMASHO!!
Henry.

Bikesforjapan achieves target of 500 bikes!!!Tokyo collections “on pause mode” for the next few weeks!
Following the massive collection efforts around Tokyo this past weekend, and less than 3 weeks after kicking off this initiative, Bikesforjapan is proud to announce that we have now reached our initial target of 500 bikes! This is an incredible achievement which comes down to the amazing support and collaboration of literally hundreds of people over the past few weeks. To everyone who has been involved everywhere - we cannot thank you enough for being such great partners and sponsors of this initiative so far. Congratulations to you all!
Bikesforjapan will now focus all our donation funding, our time and our energy on repairing the remaining bikes which we’ve not yet had a chance to work on, and on delivering them from our storage areas to the communities and individuals who are yet to be reached through other supply routes. As we do this - aside from the few group collections we have already scheduled - we will be putting “on pause mode” any more bike pick-ups over the next few weeks until further notice. We will review the situation and needs once again in May before deciding how to move forward from there. In the meantime we will of course keep you all closely updated on all the people and places we are delivering your bikes to.
Bikesforjapan this week
Tonight we will have one 10-tonne and one 4-tonne truck hauling around 200 bikes up to our storage area near Tagajo, where they will be held prior to delivery during the next few weeks ahead. Simultaneously we have been put in touch with a number of people at various locations across Fukushima, Miyagi and Iwate – some of whom we have already delivered bikes to directly, and some of whom we will be visiting in the next week ahead. Yesterday (Sunday) one of our team led a truck delivery of over 30 adults’ and kids’ bikes to two kindergarten communities in Iwaki-shi, Fukushima (details and photos of his journey to follow once he arrives back in Tokyo). On Wednesday April 27th we will be trucking 80 bikes destined for people dotted around in Natori-shi, Higashi Matsushima and Ishinomaki.
If anyone hears of any other communities or shelters who you feel would benefit from our support please don’t hesitate to let us know at bikesforjapan@gmail.com
SO - still lots and lots of work to be done, and many more updates and photographs of our efforts to follow. Please stay tuned and please continue to give us your warm encouragement and support along the way. Any small donations you are able to provide will also be key to keeping this going for as long as possible. Thank you in advance for continuing to walk this journey with us. Now, to the next stage :-)

Triathlete Trio Shin, Yukiatsu and Jean-Marc very kindly reached out to Bikesforjapan a few weeks ago with an offer to purchase new kids’ bikes for Daiki to deliver to children in Tohoku. All with children of their own, the three of them wanted to make a difference by helping to bring the smiles back to the faces of kids in Tohoku. Between them they purchased over a dozen sparkling brand new bikes, which arrived at Daiki’s shop still wrapped in their cardboard boxes this weekend. We will be delivering them directly to kids at kindergartens in Northern Miyagi this week on Wednesday (photos will follow). THANK YOU for this extremely kind gesture which will very soon make some kids very happy!

Special thanks to the student volunteers at the Shibaura Institute of Technology
Over the past few days many people have asked how on earth our team is able to find the time to fix up hundreds of bikes in between collecting them and sending them up to Tohoku for delivery. The answer: with the support and expertise of the student volunteers at the Shibaura Institute of Technology’s Bike Club (www.shibaura-it.ac.jp). Over the past week, a group of students have worked tirelessly – sometimes past midnight while relying on the light from their car headlamps to work under – on patching inner tubes, fixing chains, adjusting brake pads, re-fitting new cogs, re-working brake and gear cables etc. I have seen them at work and they are an impressive lot! It is thanks to them that Daiki and the team are able to restore many of the bikes you have kindly donated to our program. These guys have not only been working on the bikes, but have also been taking it in turns to volunteer at the shelter in Tagajo as well as leading some of the bike deliveries being made to other specific locations in Tohoku that have reached out to us for help.
Hats off to you all for your great work!!

American School in Japan (ASIJ) supports Bikesforjapan!
Parents, teachers and students at the American School in Japan (Nomizu, Chofu-shi, Tokyo) last week organized a bike collection and managed to gather close to 50 bikes which were picked up by Bikesforjapan on Sunday. Special thanks go to ASIJ faculty and parents for helping to lead this project. Over the past few weeks the ASIJ community has been doing some inspiring work organizing initiatives to donate desks for schools in Tagajo, as well as sending groups of volunteers up to various parts of the region to offer BBQ meals at shelters. Bikesforjapan is honored to have received ASIJ’s support for our activities as well.
